Yae no sakura # 1-8

Eps.1 ならぬことはならぬ 

Born as the daughter of a gunnery mentor in the Aizu clan in 1845, Yae grows up to be a strong-minded girl with a competitive spirit who often is quite a handful even for her parents. Yae holds admiration for her elder brother, Kakuma, who is excellent in both literary and military arts. Witnessing Kakuma's splendid shooting with a gun, Yae becomes captivated by the art of gunnery, however, her father Gonpachi disapproves and scolds her severely. In the fall of 1851, Yae interrupts an important military training of the Aizu clan which causes an incident; Yae is rescued though by Katamori Matsudaira, the head of the Aizu clan. Her encounter with Katamori changes her life later on. 1868

(慶応4)年8月、砲撃をあびる会津･鶴ヶ城内で、スペンサー銃を構え戦う若き女性銃士がいた。山本八重(綾瀬はるか)、後の新島八重である。 　戦からさかのぼること17年前。5歳の八重(鈴木梨央)は男勝りで負けん気が強く、父･権八(松重豊)や母･佐久(風吹ジュン)も手をやいていた。そんな八重が慕ってやまないのが、兄・覚馬(西島秀俊)だった。銃で華麗に的を撃ち抜く兄の姿を見た八重は、砲術に夢中になっていく。 　その年の秋、会津藩士が最も張り切る軍事操練「追鳥狩(おいとりがり)」の真骨頂である模擬戦の最中に事件が起こる。「一番鳥」の本命と目される番頭(ばんがしら)・西郷頼母(西田敏行)が一羽の鳥に狙いを定め竹鞭を振り上げたとき、八重が邪魔をしてしまったのだ。そこへ藩主・松平容保(綾野剛)が現れ、八重を救う。この出会いが、八重のその後の人生を変えていくことになる。 

Eps. 2 やむにやまれぬ心 

Kakuma, who is now in Edo to learn western gunnery at a private school run by Shozan Sakuma, feels left behind, learning the other clans have been hungrily acquiring western technology at the Shozan School ahead of the Aizu clan. Meanwhile in Aizu, Yae is convinced by her parents to let go of her obsession with gunnery. After the arrest of Shozan, Kakuma had no choice but to return back to Aizu where he is surprised to see Yae competing with a man in the lifting of a large straw rice bag. Also surprised and touched by Yae's self-acquired deep knowledge in gunnery, Kakuma decides to teach Yae the rudiments of gunnery. 

鉄砲に夢中になる八重(鈴木梨央)は、両親から砲術への思いを断つよう厳しく諭されていた。一方、八重の兄・覚馬(西島秀俊)は、佐久間象山(奥田瑛二)の塾で会津に先んじて西洋の技術を貪欲に習得していく他藩の動きを知り、焦っていた。 　そんな折、吉田寅次郎(小栗旬)がアメリカへの密航を企て、象山がそれをそそのかしたとして捕縛される事件が勃発。仕方なく会津へ戻った覚馬は、大きな米俵を持ち上げて男と競争に興じる八重(綾瀬はるか)の姿を見て驚く。さらに、八重が砲術の知識を深く習得していることを知った覚馬は胸を打たれ、思いを断ち切らなかった八重に砲術の手ほどきするのだった。 

Eps. 3 蹴散らして前へ 

While Yae is eagerly reading a book about gunnery on top a cherry tree, she encounters Shonosuke Kawasaki, Kakuma's fellow at the Shozan School. Shonosuke, came to Aizu to lend a hand to Kakuma, who is preparing for the establishment of Rangaku (western studies) academy. However, Kakuma provokes antipathy from conservative members of the Aizu clan and is ordered to stay home. Learning Yae's passionate devotion for gunnery, Kakuma recalls Shozan's words to keep moving forward even when facing obstacles. Kakuma sets about designing a new-type gun together with Yae and Shonosuke. 

桜の木の上で砲術本を無心に読む八重(綾瀬はるか)は、毛虫に驚いた拍子に本を落としてしまう。そこへ若き武士が通りがかり、その本を拾い上げる。それは江戸から覚馬(西島秀俊)を援助しようとやってきた尚之助(長谷川博己)だった。よき協力者を得て蘭学所の整備を急ぐ覚馬だったが、藩の守旧派の反感を買い禁足を命じられてしまう。 　兄を心配した八重は、尚之助に習ってつくった弾丸を覚馬のもとへ持っていき、砲術の指南をせがむ。そんなひたむきな妹の姿を見て、覚馬の脳裏に象山(奥田瑛二)が蟄居先からよこした手紙の一節がよみがえる。「何かを始めれば必ず邪魔する者が現れる。蹴散らして前へ進むのだ」。覚馬は、八重と尚之助と共に、新式銃の設計に乗り出すのだった。 

Eps. 4 妖霊星(ようれいぼし) 

 In 1858, Kakuma is pardoned from confinement with the help of Tanomo Saigo, the chief retainer of the Aizu clan. Shonosuke is appointed to a professorship on Kakuma's recommendation. Kakuma marries a woman named Ura. Meanwhile, Naosuke Ii, a senior aide in the Tokugawa Shogunate, concludes a trade treaty with the US without permission from members of the Hitotsubashi-Tokugawa family, including Nariaki Tokugawa, the head of the Mito clan. Outraged Nariaki rushes to see Ii, however, is instead imposed a suspension order. Although Katamori appeals to Ii to remit the punishment on Nariaki, the attempt is futile. 

1858(安政５)年、西郷頼母(西田敏行)の松平容保(綾野剛)への働きかけが実り、覚馬(西島秀俊)の禁足が解かれ、八重(綾瀬はるか)もわがことのように喜ぶ。さらに、尚之助(長谷川博己)の教授方就任もかない、覚馬はうら(長谷川京子)をめとることになった。 　一方、幕政では大老になった井伊直弼(榎木孝明)が、水戸藩主・徳川斉昭(伊吹吾郎)ら一橋派に無断で日米修好通商条約を締結。激怒した斉昭らは井伊のもとへ押しかけるが…。 

Eps. 5 松陰の遺言 

Ura becomes pregnant with Kakuma's child which brings joy to the Yamamoto family. However, the joy is short-lived as Ura miscarries the baby while trying to protect Kakuma from the attack by masterless samurais who are of the antiforeigner faction. In Edo, Shoin Yoshida, who once visited Aizu and enjoyed kite-flying with Yae, is executed in the Ansei Purge. Learning of Shoin's death, Kakuma and Yae are struck with deep grief. Naosuke Ii, who provoked the wrath of antiforeigner faction, is assassinated in the Sakuradamon Incident. 

うら(長谷川京子)が覚馬(西島秀俊)の子を身ごもり、八重(綾瀬はるか)は佐久(風吹ジュン)たちと共に祝福する。 　しかし、その喜びもつかの間、覚馬を攘夷派の不逞(ふてい)浪士が急襲する。さらに、かつて八重たちとも交流があった吉田寅次郎(松陰・小栗旬)が、安政の大獄で処刑されたという知らせを聞き…。 

Eps. 6 会津の決意 

Futaba, the sister of Okura Yamakawa (Yae's childhood friend), marries Heima Kajiwara, a promising retainer of the Aizu clan. In Edo, the Satsuma clan conveys Emperor's edict, which urges the shogun to see the Emperor in Kyoto, to the Tokugawa shogunate. To maintain security in Kyoto, Shungaku Matsudaira, a shogunal prime minister in the Tokugawa shogunate, purposefully designates Katamori to be the military governor of Kyoto. Although Katamori firmly declines the assignment, Shungaku compels Katamori into obedience. 

八重(綾瀬はるか)の幼なじみ、山川大蔵(玉山鉄二)の姉・二葉(市川実日子)が、会津藩の有望な家臣・梶原平馬(池内博之)のもとへ嫁ぐことが決まった。 　一方、江戸では勅命を携えた薩摩が幕府に将軍の上洛を迫る。これを受け幕府は、京都の治安維持にあたる京都守護職の選任へにわかに着手。政事総裁職の松平春嶽(村上弘明)は、かねてから優れた見識をもつ容保(綾野剛)に白羽の矢を立てるが…。 

Eps. 7 将軍の首 

Kakuma leaves for Kyoto, following Katamori. In Kyoto, the antiforeigner masterless samurais continuously cause disturbances, creating an unsettling atmosphere. To pray for peace, Emperor Komei, who takes a liking to Katamori, exceptionally gives his clothing to Katamori. In hopes to meet Emperor's expectation, Katamori daringly tries to settle the situation through dialogue with the masterless samurais. However, after perceiving that their true intention is to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate, Katamori shifts to stronger measures against them. As Okura receives an order to go to Kyoto, Yae becomes greatly concerned about Kakuma. 

 覚馬(西島秀俊)が八重(綾瀬はるか)や尚之助(長谷川博己)たちのもとから離れ、容保(綾野剛)に従って都へと旅立った。 　そのころ都では、攘夷を唱える不逞浪士たちによる天誅(てんちゅう)騒ぎが相次ぎ、不穏な日々が続いていた。安寧を祈る孝明天皇(市川染五郎)は、容保 を気に入り、自らの御衣(おんぞ)を特別に授ける。その期待に応えようとした容保は、攘夷派の浪士の言い分にもあえて耳を貸し、説得によって改心させてい く方策を採ろうとする。しかし、容保の融和策はうまくいかず、倒幕を目指す攘夷派の不逞浪士へ厳しい取り締まりを始める。 御衣(おんぞ)…天皇や身分の高い人の着衣を敬っていう言葉。 

Eps. 8 ままならぬ思い 

Alarmed by the Aizu clan's move to strengthen the crackdown on the antiforeigner faction, court nobles close to the Choshu clan send Katamori a counterfeit mandate under the name of Emperor Komei to drive Katamori out from Kyoto. Shortly after, however, Katamori receives an autograph letter from Emperor Komei, and learning of Choshu clan's conspiracy, Katamori's sense of responsibility increases toward his duty. Tanomo comes from Aizu to urge Katamori not to take a strong stand against the antiforeigner faction. However, Katamori, who is fired up with loyalty to the Emperor, pays no heed to Tanomo's advice and instead places him under confinement. 

薙刀の稽古にいそしむ八重(綾瀬はるか)と幼なじみの時尾(貫地谷しほり)。そこで、２人は二葉(市川実日子)から弟の大蔵(玉山鉄二)の祝言が決まったことを知らされる。時尾は動揺してしまい、稽古中に足を痛めてしまう。時尾はひそかに大蔵に思いを寄せていたのだった。 　そのころ都では、倒幕を目指す攘夷派の不逞浪士を取り締まるため、剣が立つと評判の壬生浪士組を会津藩のお預かりとした。こうした動きに危機感を持った 長州派の公家たちは、容保(綾野剛)たちを都から追い出すため孝明天皇(市川染五郎)の名をかたって偽の勅書を容保へ送る。しかし、その策謀を知った容保 は、守護職への責任感をさらに強める。
